Even if Costa Brava is better known for his lovely shores than for his wine, there is an inland vineyard in Empordá region, where the Empordá Denominación de Origen (DO) wine is produced. This region is located in the north-east of the province of Girona and it extends up to the French frontier. Wine has been produced in this area since the Phoenician age, in the 5th century B.C.
Empordá wine region consists of 28 vineyards, covering an area of 2.000 hectares.
The region is characterized by variety of soils - limestone, sandy, volcanic and clayey. For this reason lots of different varieties are officially permitted in the Empordá Denominación de Origen. The Mediterranean climate, which is typical of this area, and the strong cold winds from the north create an average temperature of 16° C. The production of this region includes both red and white wines. Here are the main grape varieties.
